Reading Ideas
for Home

Children love books! Here are some quick and easy ideas to use at home with your kindergartener to encourage his/her enthusiasm and curiosity about reading.
Family Mailboxes
Each family member creates a homemade personal mailbox labeled with his or her name. The 'mailbox' is placed outside each person's bedroom door. Parents begin the letter writing experience by writing a letter to the children and placing it in their mailbox. Important rule: when you get a letter you must respond to it. Don't forget to write in your letters questions that need responses. Example: What would you like for breakfast tomorrow?

I Spy Game

During dinner, during a car drive, during takinck play the familiar 'I Spy' game with a beginning sound or letter as the clue. Example: I spy something that begins with the letter 'm'.
Take turns.

Read! Read! Read!

Read together for fun and for learning new information. A perfect time to snuggle.

Print Around the House

Using a large font on the computer or a colorful marker pen create a wide variety of labels of various objects in the home. Have your kindergartener help you with suggestions and placing the labels. Then have fun with them on an everyday basis.
