Supporting Kindergarten through 4th Grade Students

DISTRICT ASSESSMENTS

  • DIBELS (Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills) Fall, winter, spring for kindergarten and first graders

  • ISEL (Illinois Screening of Early Literacy) Given to qualified 1st graders as an added assessment and/or instructional tool

  • CBM (Curriculum Based Measurement) Fall, winter, and spring for 2nd-4th graders

  • MAZE (comprehension assessment) Fall, winter, and spring for 2nd-4th graders

  • Students qualify by falling below the established score on two reading assessments. Program explanation letters are sent out to qualifying students’ parents during the fall, winter, and sometimes early spring when appropriate. Since progress is monitored throughout the year, students can graduate by demonstrating adequate progress at any time.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM

  • Meet with students in small groups of 2-5, 2-5 days a week (according to students’ needs)

  • Support the district reading curriculum and provide additional reading instruction for eligible students

TEACHER SUPPORT

  • Act as a resource and support for classroom teachers

  • Offer reading research and seminars for teachers

  • Present to faculty each fall to overview the program

  • Attend parent/teacher conferences (fall and spring when requested)

  • Plan and facilitate collaboration days with teachers during the year

PARENT INVOLVEMENT/ COMMUNICATION

  • Program overview presented in the fall to parents of students involved with the reading program

  • Teachers communicate progress via note, phone, email, conferences, or meetings

  • Parents play an important role at home to assist completing reading activities and homework

  • When requested, a summer packet with literacy activities, book lists and websites for each appropriate grade level will be sent home

  • Parents are encouraged to use the public library for resources and summer programming
