From the Principal’s Desk
Greetings, Parents,
Boy, did we have an exciting day at HMS! Around 10:45 this morning HMS experienced a full power outage. I want to assure you that our school was well prepared for this “mini-crisis” and used it as an opportunity to test our leadership and organizational skills. I must say that your kids did a great job, and many of our 5th graders commented on how this outage related to their colonial times study. Hats off to our staff, including custodians and cafeteria workers, who came together to keep the students calm and ensure a sense of normalcy for our kids.
At the onset of the outage we made an announcement that students would still go outside for recess and that, during class time, students should stay in classrooms. Additionally, we closed the second floor bathrooms as they do not have windows for natural light. At lunch, while the lines moved slowly, all students made it though and feasted on pizza.
ComEd restored power at about 12:20. Situations like this really make us understand how much we rely on technology and teamwork. Kids and adults came together to make a difficult situation okay.
Thanks, and have a great weekend,
Dave
Headlines
For the Week of January 29 – February 4, 2012
Next joint HMS/WJHS PTO Meeting: February 9, at 7:00 p.m., at the Junior High. Please join us as our guest speaker, Peggy Kubert, LCSW and Director of Erika’s Lighthouse, leads a presentation on resilience. Every parent wants their child to have the skills they need to manage life successfully on a daily basis and to be happy in life. The capacity to cope effectively with life’s challenges is called resilience – and some researchers say it is the most important quality you can instill in your child. Don’t miss this important opportunity to learn about it!
Variety Show: HMS Factor. Thank you to all the students who attended previews for the HMS Factor! Online registration has started for all cast and crew. Information and registration procedures can be found on the PTO website. Any questions can be directed to Ann@thenoodlecafe.com or Wendyraymond@comcast.net.
Cafeteria help needed! Come volunteer for a shift (or more) at the Highcrest cafeteria. Not only is it a great way to get in to see your child, even if they don’t come through the lunch line, but the cafeteria workers cannot get our kids fed in a timely fashion without our help. The shift is no more than two hours. To sign up, go to www.highcrestpto.org and click on the cafeteria sign up link on the left side of the page. Thank you!
