HABIT OF MIND: Persisting"Winners never quit, and quitters never win!"
From the PrincipalDear McKenzie Families, Halloween is almost here! And with it comes some reminders about appropriate McKenzie Halloween wear. Students are invited to wear a simple costume to school on Monday. We ask that you save the elaborate version for later in the day when your family ventures out for trick-or-treating. Please avoid masks and/or things that might cause your child to have difficulty walking in our parade, as well as pretend weapons, blood, etc. Our parade will be led by our kindergartners, beginning at 9:30 starting at our front doors. Family members are welcome to come join the fun, as we will be making a full circle around the school grounds. The front sidewalk and the playground seem to be some of the favorite viewing spots. Morning Kindergartners will be dismissed at 10:20, and the rest of the students at 12:15. As mentioned in previous newsletters, our PM Kindergarten students are welcome to join in the parade if accompanied by a parent. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a beautiful, sunny day! Parent Teacher Conferences will also soon be here. The deadline for online sign up is Nov. 3rd. One of the important resources that was included in this summer's Back to School electronic mailing is the Parent Handbook. If you happened to overlook it in the many things that require your attention during the start of school, I encourage you to spend some time reviewing it now. There are two parts: the district handbook contains all the information common to all D39 schools; the addendum holds information particular to McKenzie. You can easily access these on our district website at:http://www.wilmette39.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=285&Itemid=317. Beginning next week our library will be sending out overdue notices via email. These are reminders for students to return books so that other students may check them out. Students who do not return their books during library class may place books on hold for three days. They may always visit the library anytime that their teacher allows. We do NOT charge for overdue books, but we will request payment for replacement if the book is lost. The good news – if a lost book is found, you will receive your money back! Schedules change, classes take field trips, students are absent. If you receive an email that you believe is in error, please don’t hesitate to contact our librarian, Sally Schoenberg, at schoenbs@wilmette39.org. Enjoy your weekend, and see you on Monday! Dr. Welter From the P.T.A.It’s Ladies’ Night Out…for all McKenzie moms at the Wilmette Theater! We have rented out the theater on Thursday, Nov. 3rd at 7 p.m. Come enjoy yummy appetizers, drinks and the movie "Bridesmaids." Bring all your friends so we can pack the place and have a fabulous time! Go to the PTA website (www.mckenziepta.com) to order your tickets in advance. Any questions, please contact Lauri Harris at kharris_1@msn.com.
Spirit Days Start Up Again - Student Council will be sponsoring "First Friday Spirit Days" on the first Friday of each month. The first spirit day of the year will be "Red, White, and Blue Day" on November 4th. Students are invited and encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing red, white, and blue.
Concerned About Traffic & Safety? As the weather gets colder and wetter, the drop-off and pick-up traffic becomes more difficult for everybody. If you are interested in helping get our kids to and from school more safely, please contact Jennifer Konz-Alt at jdkonz@hotmail.com to get involved.
Share the Warmth! We are collecting new hats and mittens for children in need at our sister school, Carman-Buckner Elementary, in Waukegan. Please donate new items for students, kindergarten through sixth grade. Collection boxes will be in the McKenzie main lobby and the kindergarten entrances through November 15th.

In Other NewsBike riding season in Wilmette is coming to an end, and many people may be cleaning out their garages. What can you do with the bikes you’ve outgrown? On Saturday, November 5th, the Pedal Power team will host its 4th annual bike drive, collecting gently used bikes that will be donated to the Chicago Public Schools, rewarding honor roll students at their school. Bikes of any size can be dropped off at McKenzie’s blacktop (outside the cafeteria), from 9 a.m. till noon. Thank you! Bring Your Used Books to School – The Wilmette Rotary Club’s Annual Book Drive will take place from 10/3 through 11/18.
