HABIT OF MIND: PersistingFrom the PrincipalDear McKenzie Families, Happy Friday, one and all! Once again, it was wonderful to have such great parent attendance at our second Curriculum Night this week. We hope you found the information presented to be helpful; I encourage you to follow up with your child's teacher, should you have any questions or concerns. We have received ISAT scores from the State for the tests our students took last March (when he/she was in third grade). As is our dissemination practice for Performance Series Reports (May) and progress reports (February and June), we will be sending home your child's ISAT results in his/her backpack on Wednesday, September 21st. If you would prefer to have these results mailed or you would like to pick them up from our school office, please let me know by Monday. There are many thank you's to offer this week---from the yummy and fun Ice Cream Social to the helping hands offered on Picture Day! Thank you, also, to all who attended our first PTA meeting, as well as those who presented the helpful information about parent communication and upcoming events. Special thanks to our teacher representative, Mrs. Epler, who shared curricular highlights from each grade level. If you have not yet visited the PTA website, I encourage you to do so by clicking onto www.mckenziepta.com. You find timely information in a very user-friendly format. For those who are new to McKenzie, it's important to note that your PTA membership dues will provide you with a school directory, a handy tool for networking with the McKenzie community. Directories will be distributed soon. Payment of dues can be done through PayPal, which is linked directly to the PTA website. I would like to remind you of two other very important deadlines: Chess Club for both Kindergarten and Gr. 1-4 is beginning next week, and there are still openings available. If your child is interested in this popular extra-curricular activity, it's not too late to join! Visit the PTA website for further information. Also, please be sure to submit all orders for your favorite McKenzie school spiritwear by Monday. As always, these customized orders cannot be returned or exchanged. In your recent visit to McKenzie, I'm sure you have noticed the countdown bulletin board in our school lobby, announcing that our School Book Fair is just a few days away! Each year our PTA provides this wonderful opportunity to generate excitement about books. They provide us with an outstanding selection of titles and bringing shopping right to our school gymnasium. I look forward to seeing you there! In closing, I am saddened to inform you that Nadine Ibrahim, our school social worker, is currently taking a family medical leave in order to care for her husband who is seriously ill. While she will most likely return later this year, we have hired Mrs. Lenore Deutsch to substitute in her absence. Lenore brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field and has already begun to share her talents with us. Upon meeting her, I am sure you will agree she is yet another wonderful addition to this incredible school community. Together, we do make wonderful things happen, each and every day! Enjoy your weekend, Dr. Welter From the P.T.A.Next Week - “To The Book Fair and Beyond!” - The Scholastic Book Fair runs from Tues., 9/20 - Thurs., 9/22 in the Small Gym. Books will be sold each morning (8:30-10:00) and each afternoon (3:00-5:30), with extended hours Wednesday evening (5:30-7:30). Additional hours on Wednesday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., are for kindergartners only. Volunteers are still needed for a few shifts. Go to www.mckenziepta.com for available shift times and to sign up. For over 40 years, Jean Kilbourne, Ed.D., has been a singular force exploring how the advertising industry shapes public health issues. Her presentation “So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood” will examine the harmful consequences of the sexualization of children and teenagers and suggest some strategies for change. Plan to attend at the School of Saints Faith, Hope and Charity, 180 Ridge Rd., Winnetka, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27th.
Your Kid’s World in 2025… What will the job market look like when our children graduate from college? What kinds of skills and knowledge will be important? The Parent Learning Network (PLN) is holding a workshop to discuss expert predictions on these issues. The seminar will be held twice to accommodate a variety of schedules -- on Tuesday, October 4th at 9:30 a.m. at the MEC (615 Locust Rd.) and on Wednesday, October 5th at 6:30 p.m. at McKenzie. Dinner snacks and childcare are available for the evening session. Please RSVP to safialscholz@yahoo.com by 9/28 and indicate if you need childcare and/or dinner.
